Twitter will organize a developer conference in November, after 7 years of absence. What will it be about?
After a long break of seven years, Twitter will again organize a face-to-face conference dedicated to developers. The company is resurrecting Chirp, see you in San Francisco on November 16th. Chirp was the name of the very first developer conference, in 2010, before it was canceled a few years later. The last time the company hosted such a conference was Twitter Flight in 2015.
Twitter will hold a developer conference in November
Since then, Twitter has had a rather rocky relationship with developers. The company made a number of changes to its API in 2018 that were very unpopular, with very little communication to boot. Third-party client developers were particularly affected and were quick to accuse the company of “breaking” their apps.
More recently, Twitter has tried to improve things. The platform launched a completely new version of its API in 2020 and introduced new tools to facilitate operations for researchers. It also tested new features for developers, such as recommending certain third-party services in its own application.
What will it be about?
No one really knows, today, what will be discussed during this Chirp conference. The company explains in a blog post that there will be a “keynote, technical sessions [et] opportunities to meet the Twitter Developer Platorm team to ask questions and meet other developers in our community.” The keynote will also be broadcast live on Twitter for those who cannot be present on site.
The timing of this announcement is also interesting when we know the uncertainty of the future of the company following the attempted takeover by Elon Musk. Company executives have repeatedly made it clear that he knows nothing of the multi-billion dollar’s intentions for Twitter, and current CEO Parag Agrawal may not be around for long if that deal comes to an end. On the other hand, Twitter’s developer tools could be an important source of revenue for the company – which remains a big priority for Elon Musk -.
