As often, the Korean specialized press informs us about the production of OLED screens for future iPhones. This week, the ETNews site reports interesting information allowing it to estimate the production volumes of the next iPhone 14 this time. We learn that Samsung would supply a total of 80 million OLED panels to Apple for the different versions of its next device, with a start of production and deliveries which should begin in the third quarter of 2022… in other words, shortly.

In all, Apple would prepare us four models of iPhone 14: two classic models and two high-end models. The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro would be limited to a diagonal of 6.1 inches, against 6.7 inches for the iPhone 14 Max (or “Plus” depending on the source) and 14 Pro Max. Screen sizes already used by Apple on its current iPhone 13 range.

Two different types of OLED panels depending on the model?

According to information from ETNews, 38.17 million OLED panels would be reserved for the iPhone 14 and 14 Max. It therefore seems that Apple would distribute its OLED panels almost equally between classic and high-end models. On the other hand, we learn that the firm would have ordered two different types of OLED panels from Samsung Display. The OLED LTPS-TFT and LTPO-TFT technologies would be used for the iPhone 14, without it being known, for the moment, which models will use which technology. If we are to believe previous rumors, the LTPO panels would however be installed on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max to allow, this year, a display frequency ranging from 1 to 120 Hz and an “Always-on” display. for the lock screen… recently revamped with iOS 16.

Note that these 80 million OLED panels from Samsung would ultimately only be part of Apple’s orders for its iPhone 14. The firm would indeed consider making the Chinese BOE its annex supplier of OLED panels… with the key to additional orders, potentially in addition to the production volume already offered by Samsung.

It should also be remembered that, according to data from the Counterpoint Research institute, Apple shipped more than 237 million smartphones between the second quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. If this number also takes into account the older generation iPhones as well as the iPhone SE, it far exceeds the 80 million screens ordered for the future iPhone 14. It could therefore only be a first order of ‘Apple to Samsung, unless the American firm is equipped, as often, with several suppliers.
