Apple deletes the practical function of the iPad: users must react soon | TechBuzz

Ideally, an update should only add new features, but in the case of the upcoming iPadOS 16 this is not the case. Apple’s iPad loses a practical function. If in doubt, existing users will have to invest more money and also buy an Apple TV or a HomePod.

HomeKit is Apple’s interface for smart home devices that can be controlled with the iPhone or iPad. In iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, the feature is now being extensively revised, with consequences. So far, an iPad can be configured as a so-called HomeKit hub with the Home app. The tablet then serves as a central control unit, enabling functions such as control outside the home, automations and much more. Now the bad news: If you install iPadOS 16 on the iPad in the future, the function will be removed. Apple’s tablet can no longer be used as a hub after the update. No error, but wanted by Apple (Source: 9to5Mac).

iPadOS 16: iPad can no longer be used as a home hub

Apple clarifies: In the future, only an Apple TV or a HomePod will function as a home hub. If you don’t have one yet, you have to buy either Apple’s set-top box (see Amazon) or a HomePod mini (see MediaMarkt), the big and original HomePod is no longer available. Ergo: Extra costs are possible for previous users.

Apple explains the possibilities of the new Home app in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16:

Apple does not provide a direct justification for the rigorous step. However, we can already imagine the considerations. A hub should actually always be available in the house and connected to the Internet to ensure the associated smart home functions. In practice, however, this probably does not apply to all iPads. Many are not just lying around at home, permanently connected to electricity and the network. An Apple TV or a HomePod, however, is certainly not really used mobile. Constant availability is guaranteed.

Nevertheless, the decision is unfortunate, for example for users who actually use an iPad as a home control and hub, usually smartly packaged in a wall mount. If this is the case, in case of doubt you would have to spend some more money and buy an Apple TV or HomePod.

Weather app as a gain

By the way: With the official weather app, the iPad at least gets something new, even though you had to wait 12 years for this app. The new window management in iPadOS 16 will only be available for powerful iPads with an M1 chip – to date the iPad Pro 2021 and the iPad Air 5.
