Meta, Microsoft, Sony, Adobe, Nividia and another 30 major companies are joining forces for a Metaverse standard. This is made clear today by means of a press release. However, there are two major absentees in the long list of companies: Apple and Google.
The rumors that Apple is working on its own solution for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality have been around for a while. The lack of Apple in the list, especially given Tim Cook gives a big hint, seems to be the first confirmation of those plans.
Apple not part of Metaverse Standards Forum
There are 35 so-called “founding members” who have to take care of the realization of a standard for the Metaverse. Apple, the company that has been rumored to have been working on its own plans in this area for years, is definitely missing from that list. The American company of Tim Cook therefore does not belong to “the companies and standard organizations that combine equality and priority for a Metaverse standard”. In a press release on the specially set up website it becomes clear which parties are part:
- OxSenses
- Academy Software Foundation
- Adobe
- Ali Baba
- Autodesk
- Avataar Blackshark.ai
- CalConnect
- Cesium
- Daly Realism
- Disguise
- The Enosema Foundation
- Epic Games
- The Express Language Foundation
- Huawei
- IKEA
- John Peddie Research
- Khronos
- Lamina1
- Maxon
- Meta
- Microsoft
- NVIDIA
- OpenAR Cloud
- The Open Geospatial Consortium
- Otoy
- Perey Research and Consulting
- Qualcomm Technologies
- Ribose
- Sony Interactive Entertainment
- Spatial Web Foundation
- Unity
- VerseMaker
- Wayfair
- The Web3D Consortium
- The World Wide Web Consortium
- XR Association
Despite the heavy investment in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, Apple is still missing from the list. We can of course think of the reason ourselves, but Tim Cook seems to be able to tell you better.
Tim Cook asks for patience
In an interview with China Daily USA, an English-language news outlet controlled by the Chinese government, Tim Cook shares his enthusiasm for Augmented Reality. For example, he says that 14,000 ARKit apps in the App Store have already delivered countless experiences for millions of people around the world. “The most important part in any technology, including AR, is humanity. That’s what we do every day,” he says.
Then the CEO of Apple says that there are many different possibilities in this area and that it makes the people of his company enthusiastic. “And sort off stay tuned and you’ll see what we have to offer”. Add this statement, Tim Cook’s overt love for AR, and the lack of Apple on the list and you know what to expect.

The chance that we can still enjoy an AR headset or Apple Glass this year is very small. There are currently varying expectations that the first product will not be available until January 2023. Although there is always hope that we will get a sneak peek in the autumn of 2022.
