According to forecasts, North America should be the 5G leader in the world by 2027, with as many as nine out of ten mobile subscriptions on that generation of mobile networks, Ericsson states in its Mobility Report.

At the same time, the Swedish giant predicts that by the end of this year, there will be more than a billion 5G subscriptions in the world. By 2027, there should be 4.4 billion and more than half will be those with 5G capabilities. And Europe is doing well on this issue, which is currently lagging behind North America, China and its wider surroundings.

More specifically, Western Europe will have 82 percent 5G subscriptions, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which consists of Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, will have 80 percent 5G subscriptions, and Northeast Asia 74 percent .

The report also reveals that global data traffic has doubled in the last two years. This growth has been driven by increased use of smartphones and mobile broadband, as well as the digitalisation of society and industry. Not surprisingly, several hundred million people become new subscribers to mobile broadband each year.

Forecasts and current figures show that 5G is scaling faster than all previous generations of mobile technologies. Approximately a quarter of the world’s population currently has access to 5G coverage. In the first quarter of 2022 alone, about 70 million 5G subscriptions were added.

The increasingly important role that fixed wireless access (FWA) plays in the provision of broadband services is also emphasized. Ericsson predicts that the number of FWA connections will exceed one hundred million in 2022, a figure that is projected to more than double by 2027, reaching nearly 230 million.

As for the Internet of Things (IoT), the report states that in 2021, broadband IoT (4G / 5G) surpassed 2G and 3G as the technology that connects the largest share of all mobile IoT connected devices, accounting for 44 percent of all connections.

Massive IoT technologies (NB-IoT, Cat-M) grew by almost 80 percent during 2021, reaching close to 330 million connections. The number of IoT devices connected to these technologies is expected to surpass 2G / 3G in 2023.
