Cupra unveils a new version of its UrbanRebel, its future electric city car unveiled as a concept, three years before its official launch. The opportunity to tackle the Cupra Tavascan so quickly.
A little less than a year ago, Cupra arrived at the Munich show with an astonishing concept announcing the arrival of a very promising city car in its range. It was then the UrbanRebel, thus giving a first idea of the ambitions of the Iberian firm for a future urban model, during the ID.1 at Volkswagen. With its tortured and somewhat caricatural features, we suspected that it was not going to be marketed in this form.
We now have confirmation of this, as the manufacturer yesterday unveiled a new version of its style study, much wiser, and offering, among other things, a whole new face. What give us a little more precise idea of what will look like the final version, scheduled for 2025.
An assumed style
If the lines of the concept have very clearly calmed down, they still remain assumed and easily recognizable. The front face remains indeed very aggressive with its wide grille and its triangular optics installed very high. But it is above all at the rear that this Cupra UrbanRebel is the most impressive, with its imposing shield and its unique light signature, not to mention its astonishing roof spoiler. Large 21-inch rims complete the package, while the city car is inspired by the world of SUVs, with its ground clearance of 21.8 cm. There is no doubt, however, that the production version will still be a little less extravagant.
Very techno interior
On board, the presentation is really modern, with its large touch screen, the diagonal of which has not been communicated. This is then associated with a digital handset divided into three parts, including one dedicated to navigation in augmented reality. At the simple press of the button dedicated to the driving modes, two other small screens unfold on either side when the Cupra configuration is activated. Very technological, this driving position is also very futuristic, with its steering wheel that reminds us of a game console controller, while the various elements have been made in 3D printing and weaving. A technique that should be used on future models of the brand. Note that the Cupra UrbanRebel ignores leather and aluminum, in order to offer a more ecological interior.
Up to 440 kilometers of range
Cupra was rather vocal about the technical specifics of its new UrbanRebel, which is based on a shortened version of the Volkswagen group’s MEB platform, called MEB Small. Technical cousin of the future ID.Life, the Spanish city car will only be available in traction with a single engine, displaying a power of 226 horsepower, against 435 hp for the previous concept. The 0 to 100 km/h is then achieved in 6.9 seconds. If the battery capacity has not been announced, Cupra points out that its newcomer will be able to travel up to 440 kilometers on a single charge for the version called “range”. It could thus embark the 58 kWh unit already present on several models of the Volkswagen group, including the ID.3.
Produced at the Martorell factory in Spain, the production version of the Cupra UrbanRebel should be marketed by 2025. If the price has not yet been indicated, it will probably be necessary to count on an entry ticket of around €25,000.
Cupra Tavascan: still planned for 2024
The Spanish brand took the opportunity to remind that its electric SUV, the Tavascan was still planned for 2024 but without providing further details. We will therefore have to be satisfied with the rare information we have about it, namely a large coupe SUV equipped with two electric motors with a power of 225 kW (306 hp), a 77 kWh battery for a range of 450 km and a 0 to 100 km/h shot in less than 6.5 seconds.
