Linux has a high-performance networking project called eXpress Data Path (XDP) that has been part of the Linux kernel since version 4.8. Microsoft is now working on the “XDP for Windows” open source project, which is based on XDP.

Several major technology companies are already investing in the high-performance network project called eXpress Data Path (XDP), which has been part of the Linux kernel since version 4.8, including Google, Amazon and Intel. XDP enables applications to have low latency and high throughput in networks.
Now Microsoft has also got involved with its open source project “XDP for Windows”, which is based on XDP and with which the company really wants to make XDP cross-platform. So far, XDP for Windows includes a network driver and a placeholder API for user mode. Microsoft has emphasized that the project is still under active development but should be ready for testing and prototyping. The company is also collaborating with other companies and adding support for XDP to the MsQuic protocol.
Microsoft has indicated that anyone can clone and build on the XDP for Windows repository on GitHub, as the project is designed to accelerate network performance in various scenarios. However, it should be noted that XDP is currently only supported by a handful of network cards (NIC) with the appropriate drivers.
