Google is about to permanently disconnect Hangouts. The American giant begins to invite users to migrate to Google Chat.
Like all tech giants, Google is never short of ideas. This results in the launch, on a more or less large scale, of many products and services. Some become very popular and have a long existence, others never come out of the testing phase. Regarding instant messaging, the Mountain View company has always had some difficulties. It will soon make Google Hangouts disappear.
Google is about to permanently disconnect Hangouts
The few diehards who still use it will have to say goodbye to what is probably Google’s most resilient chat app. Google Hangouts will be disconnected in a few months. The American giant has announced that it will start migrating Hangouts users to Chat before the service is no longer available at all, in November 2022. If you are still using Hangouts on mobile, you will see a message starting today to switch either to the standalone Chat application or to Chat in Gmail. “Hangouts has been replaced by Google Chat,” the notification read.

On Gmail, Google will not begin offering this migration to Hangouts users until July. Hangouts’ web client will remain available until November and the company says users will have “at least” a month’s warning before the platform’s web page automatically redirects them to the Chat site. If you’re still actively using Hangouts, Google also promises that your conversations will automatically migrate to the new app. That being said, you can also use the Takeout service to download a copy of your data.
Google has been preparing to retire its Hangouts brand for some time, replacing it with its newer messaging services. It is therefore not surprising to see the American giant finally decide to draw the curtain definitively. And although Hangouts never enjoyed the same popularity as some competitors, the service had its fans.
