A new application now makes it possible to miniaturize the video experience offered on YouTube and make it accessible directly from your Apple Watch.
Who would have imagined that in 2022, we could follow a tutorial or any other video directly from our watch? This is exactly what Hugo Mason intends to allow by developing an application called “WatchTube” allowing Apple Watch users to take advantage of all that the site offers directly from their wrist.
The unlikely future of YouTube?
This somewhat novel app is actually a YouTube client for Apple Watch. Featured on Reddit, it now offers the ability to watch YouTube videos using sound from the watch’s speakers, which were previously blocked for music streaming.
However, it is difficult to consider the experience as being optimal. Although the Apple Watch has gained even more screen surface with the new Series 7, it is still tiny when it comes to viewing a video.

However, the application seems to give access to an experience very similar to the original application and without advertisements. It offers everything you already find on the mobile version, with Trending tabs, Shorts, a search section, a viewing history, recommendations and all the usual metrics found on videos (views, likes). It even adds the possibility of switching if desired on your smartphone via a QR Code.
An experience that has its limits
This experiment therefore does not seem to have any real shortcomings. However, the application seems a bit slow with results that can take up to 30 seconds to appear, but the viewing experience remains rather decent.
We can think that staying with your arm raised to watch videos could however quickly become tiring unless you watch it with your arm at rest. A smartphone generally requiring less tension in the muscles for the same use, we will still tend to want to enjoy a video on the big screen, but maybe for a quick consultation or just to listen to a video the choice may be justified. .
The creator of the application promises, among other things, the imminent arrival of an update which will allow you to listen to music without the video directly from the speakers of the watch. Not sure, however, that going against Apple’s will is safe. The Cupertino company might not see the initiative in a good light, while Google could also see a shortfall.
