In a more ecological approach, Audi announces that the battery modules of its electric cars are now transported to its Brussels factory by train.

Even if it does not emit any polluting gas in circulation, the electric car is not necessarily 100% clean, as we well know. Indeed, in addition to the extraction of lithium and other rare metals that make up batteries, which is done in an unethical way in developing countries, many aspects are far from being ecological.

Among them, we think in particular of transport. Indeed, in the majority of cases, materials and components are transported by truck at the various production sites. Audi is particularly concerned, but is in the process of changing things in order to make its activities a little greener.

From truck to train

Indeed, in a press release, the Ingolstadt firm announces an evolution in its logistics, since it has decided to transport the components intended for the production of the batteries of its vehicles by train. A measurement which currently only concerns the Brussels plantwhich will be supplied with battery modules by rail directly from Hungary, where they are manufactured.

As the ring brand details, “the modules are first collected by truck from the manufacturer and then transported from the logistics center in Győr (Hungary) over more than 1,000 kilometers by rail to Brussels“. Eventually, Audi wants to extend this change to all of its factories, while the firm specifies that “today around 68% of Audi vehicles in Europe already leave the factories by rail ».

2,600 tons of CO2 less

By using train rather than trucks to transport battery modules from Hungary to Belgium, Audi could reduce its CO2 emissions by around 2,600 tonnes every year. Indeed, according to the brand,so far, the modules and battery cells needed in Belgium for the Audi e-tron and the Audi e-tron Sportback were transported by truck over a distance of around 1,300 kilometers from the supplier in Hungary ».

With this measure, Audi hopes to be able to drastically reduce its ecological footprint. This, moreover, fits into the environmental program Mission: Zero implemented by the manufacturer, which wishes to achieve carbon neutrality on all of its sites by 2025.
