An unmanned IBM AI-powered boat has crossed the Atlantic. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) has arrived safely in North America – unfortunately in the wrong port.
After a few attempts and a year and a half of delays, IBM’s Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) has crossed the Atlantic. In the end, the unmanned boat, which navigates with a concentrated load of AI, needed 40 days for the 5600-kilometer crossing, according to the Blue Giant’s website. But instead of arriving in Plymouth Rock in the US state of Massachusetts as planned, the ship had to head for Halifax in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia due to technical problems.
The background to the Atlantic crossing of the MAS is the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower, which set sail on September 16, 1620 in Plymouth, England, and whose passengers settled in the coastal region of future Plymouth, Massachusetts.
IBM’s Mayflower is controlled by software that collects real-time data from six cameras and 50 sensors. The application, equipped with a lot of artificial intelligence, was previously trained with IBM’s “PowerAI Vision” technology. The boat is a 15 meter long trimaran, consisting of a main hull and two smaller side hulls. It is solar powered but has a diesel engine as a backup. With its electric motors, the boat can reach up to 10 knots.
