Cybercriminals are extremely prone to using ransomware methods of attacking victims because if they are successful, they can charge a very lucrative fee for data recovery. Because, the point of this attack is to steal important information from the owner of the device, encrypt it and offer it back with a certain ransom.

Ransomware because it experienced a renaissance during the coronavirus pandemic as more people worked from home so attacks on organizations became easier, as ransoms became significantly higher than when attacking individuals whose purchasing power was not the brightest. But neither are the data they have so valuable as to pay ransoms. Organizations cannot afford that.

Through the data handled by Atlas VPN, and based on the situation this year in 31 countries around the world and exclusively in organizations with 500 to a thousand employees, the worst is in Japan. There, the average ransom was as high as $ 4.33 million!

It is followed by the Netherlands with an average of $ 2.01 million and then the Philippines with $ 1.62 million. The company of ten countries with the highest average ransom paid after successful ransomware attacks closes Israel ($ 1.35 million), India ($ 1.2 million), Singapore ($ 1.16 million), Malaysia ($ 899,933), Hungary ($ 724,470) ), Italy (709,746 USD) and Nigeria (706,452 USD).

The most frequently attacked sectors are media and entertainment industry (79 percent), retail (77 percent), energy sector (75 percent), transport (74 percent), business and professional services (73 percent), health (66 percent), higher education (64 percent), construction (63 percent) …

As so many times before, the advice is to invest more in security systems, experts and education of all who connect to a common network. Only this is the solution to discourage hackers. And it is far cheaper to go with such a strategy than to wait for an attack to happen and for enormous money to be lost because of it.
