The market for smartphone chipsets sees competition between Qualcomm and Mediatek in particular, but other providers are positioning themselves.

According to the market researchers from Counterpoint Research, Mediatek sold by far the most processors for smartphones in the first quarter of the year – and thus achieved a market share of 38 percent. The manufacturer from Taiwan dominated the entry-level and mid-range with the series Dimensity 700 and 900.

The rival Qualcomm, on the other hand, only achieved a market share of 30 percent, but dominated the premium segment, in which the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is installed in almost every new Android flagship from the Chinese manufacturers. Accordingly, Qualcomm also achieved 44 percent of sales in the market, while Mediatek only came up with 19 percent.

The third largest supplier, Apple, does not sell its chipsets to other manufacturers and is accordingly limited to iPhones. That was still enough for a market share of 15 percent and at least 26 percent in sales.

With a market share of 11 percent, Unisoc, a manufacturer from China that mainly serves the lower segment, follows ahead of Samsung with a market share of 5 percent, with the world market leader in smartphones also using large quantities of chipsets from Qualcomm and Mediatek in addition to its own Exynos processors.
