Mercedes EQXX: more than 1,200 km across Europe without recharging, it’s possible! | TechBuzz

Mercedes announces that it has broken its own range record with its Vision EQXX. The electric car has indeed managed to travel more than 1,200 km on a single charge with its 100 kWh battery.

The Mercedes Vision EQXX concept was unveiled at CES in January 2022. The German brand then promised a range of 1,000 km, with the use of a 100 kWh battery. The feat being made possible by the aerodynamics of the car, with a drag coefficient of only 0.17 when the Mercedes EQS reaches an already excellent coefficient of 0.20. This excellent autonomy is also explained by the presence of solar panels (like the Lightyear 0) allowing to add 25 km thanks to the sun, but also and especially by the very contained weight of the battery which does not use liquid cooling system.

Mercedes has just taken its Vision EQXX 1,202km across Europe, between Stuttgart and Silverstone, via the Channel Tunnel. The German brand authorized the closure of a motorway and a detour to avoid German traffic jams. This is better than his previous record. On arrival at the Silverstone circuit, Formula E driver Nyck de Vries took over to drain the battery for 11 laps, at a maximum speed of 140 km/h. Finally, the 1,202 km were covered in 2.30 p.m., at an average speed of 83 km/h.

Ridiculously low consumption

The German brand specifies that it crossed France at the authorized speed on the motorway (i.e. 130 km/h), but we imagine that the speed was reduced in Germany or England. Indeed, according to Google Maps, the same route would take about 12 hours by car, or an average speed of 100 km/h.

Still, this feat is impressive, since the Mercedes Vision EQXX consumed, on average, 8.3 kWh / 100 km for a 1.7 ton car. A figure to be compared with the Lightyear One which had traveled more than 700 km with a consumption of approximately 8.9 kWh / 100 km and an average speed of 85 km / h for a weight of 1.6 tonnes.

1,200 km, is it really useful?

But in practice, can we really expect ranges of over 1,000 km (in practice, not on the WLTP cycle) for the next electric cars? On the one hand, one would be tempted to answer in the negative, because to achieve this feat, the Mercedes Vision EQXX uses a battery without liquid cooling, thus preventing any ultra-fast charging. The concept is therefore rather made to show what it will be possible to have in the long term, but with totally different technologies.

Indeed, it should be probable to reach autonomy of 1,000 km in the years to come by electric car. Nio thus announces 1,000 km of autonomy with its ET5 and ET7 and their battery with a capacity of 150 kWh, but it is on the Chinese CLTC cycle, more optimistic than our European WLTP cycle, which is also more optimistic than reality. . Volkswagen, via its partners, recently unveiled a semi-solid battery with a range of 1,000 km, on the CLTC cycle.

But finally, do electric cars really need such gigantic ranges ? Elon Musk thinks not and the American billionaire is not necessarily wrong.

It is enough that the ultra-fast charging network is sufficiently developed, and that the batteries gain in charging speed. The Chinese giant CATL specifically plans to produce from 2023 batteries recharge from 10 to 80% in just 10 minutes. What make the operation faster than a classic break on the highway. In the meantime, our long-term test of the Mercedes EQS impressed us, with its highway range of around 400 km.
