To summarize, PCIe 7.0 = 4 × PCIe 5.0. But, it will be necessary to be patient to have hardware compatible with this new interface.

Everything is going too fast ! PCI Express 5.0 has just begun to be rolled out to consumers, and we were able to discover PCIe 6.0 finalized this year. And now PCI-SIG has dated the arrival of the new PCI Express 7.0 interface.

Up to 512 Gb/s for our SSDs and GPUs

PCIe 7.0 will be here from 2025. As with each new generation, the data transfer rate should double again. With PCIe 7.0, that means up to 256 Gb/s (raw) over 16 lanes in a single direction.

The throughput is therefore 16 Gb/s per line and per direction, with a maximum configuration of 16 lines (PCIe 7.0 x16), i.e. a maximum throughput of 256 Gb/s. However, since PCI Express allows operation double channel simplex with simultaneous data transfer in both directions, the PCI-SIG announces a speed of 512 Gb/s.

It’s quite ironic to see the arrival of PCIe 7.0, especially since PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0 remain the standard today. PCIe 5.0, although approved for three years, is rarely used. PCIe 5.0 is already supported by Intel’s Alder Lake architecture, AMD will soon catch up with its rival with AM5 for Ryzen 7000.

Regarding PCIe 7.0, it will certainly find initial applications in specific areas such as 800G Ethernet, artificial intelligence and machine learning, high performance computing (HPC), but also quantum computers. That means some servers will likely start using the new specification as early as 2025, with consumer hardware following in subsequent years.
