Someone invented an app to watch YouTube on an Apple Watch | TechBuzz

Thanks to WatchTube, it is possible to access the entire YouTube catalog from… your wrist.

When Apple presented its connected watch in 2014, did it imagine that people would want to use it to watch videos in the future? There are several reasons to think not, such as the fact that the watch’s speakers are restricted and cannot play music. However, eight years later, the community of developers of the App Store has decided to break this limit.

On Reddit, developer Hugo Mason introduces WatchTube, a YouTube client for Apple Watch. Available on the App Store, it allows you to watch videos on your wrist, with sound directly from the speakers (remember to deactivate silent mode)!

What can WatchTube be used for? Hard to say. The Apple Watch’s screen may have improved (and enlarged) greatly since the first generation of the watch, but it’s still far too small for video use. It should also be noted that the application is incredibly complete. Trends, research, YouTube Shorts, number of views/likes, viewing history, possibility of transferring a video to your smartphone with a QR Code… As often, we tend to think that the work of this independent developer is superior to what would have done Google itself if YouTube was available on Apple Watch. It’s normal, he wanted to create an ultra-complete app, even if it means never setting limits.

To write this article, we played around with WatchTube a bit. The app is a little slow (search results appear in 20-30 seconds), but viewing works very well. It’s quite amazing, even if we’re a little afraid of having an arm cramp. The smartphone remains, in our opinion, a better device for YouTube.

In the future, Hugo Mason promises an update to WatchTube with, for novelty, an audio mode to listen to music only from the speakers of the watch. For him, there is more to hope that Google and Apple do not get involved in this initiative by cutting the pipes. Google might not appreciate this ad-free version of YouTube.
