Sony develops 100 MP sensor for mid-range phones
Expensive, high-end smartphones have the best cameras. It’s always been like that, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. With a new 100 MP sensor from Sony, mid-range cell phones could soon be in a different league and keep up with top smartphones. The new Sensor is said to belong to Sony’s IMX8 serieswhich includes other sensors such as the IMX800, which has a resolution of 54 MP and is used in the Honor 70, for example (source: Weibo).
There are no specific details about the properties of Sony’s 100 MP sensor for the mid-range yet. Nevertheless, one can assume that the picture quality will noticeably improve and thus perhaps make the high-end cell phones superfluous. Sony sells the sensors to various manufacturers and they first have to get the best out of them. Not only the hardware counts there, but also the software. The latter is extremely important and decides how good the photos really are.
There are already 108 MP sensors in mid-range cell phones, for example in smartphones from Xiaomi. The picture quality is absolutely fine. However, Sony is known for delivering the best camera sensors for smartphones, so expectations are correspondingly high. Since mid-range devices are getting better and better and there are hardly any reasons to buy an expensive high-end model, the development also makes perfect sense for Sony. In this way, the company simply earns money from smartphone sales by other manufacturers.

When will the first smartphones with the new Sony sensor be available?
This is currently not known. We also don’t yet know which manufacturer will adopt Sony’s 100MP sensor first. If the image quality is convincing, the companies should queue up to make their own cell phones with such a camera more attractive.
