IGN exclusively unveils the first images of the Orcs from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power television series.

Unlike The Hobbit trilogy consisting of An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies, Rings of Power Amazon Prime Video will not use digital technologies like computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the Orcs to life on the small screen. Like The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, the creatures were made in person by a team led by chief prosthetist Jamie Wilson: “Times have changed a lot. Twenty years ago, latex foam was used, which is a kind of porous rubber, a spongy material with a smooth or optional surface. It was a good time. But it was just at the end of filming The Lord of the Rings when we made our very first silicone version of Gimli. After that he was able to wear silicone, but now it’s the norm. So the ears, the noses, the Orc pieces are all encapsulated silicone, which is basically two layers of silicone with a removable piece of silicone in the middle, so that when it’s applied to the face of a actor, they can move and it works. It also takes the same temperature as their skin. And you can see the transparency, then you gently paint over it, kind of like makeup on a human rather than sealing and smearing paint like we used to.

The Orcs will also be physically different from those of the films: “There’s been a lot of discussion about what it’s like to be an Orc in the Second Age. It seemed fitting that they looked different, within a rawer, wilder Second Age Middle-earth, near the end of the First Age. When we discover them, they are not yet organized into armies, they are more scattered and they are scavenging. It really is a different time in their overall history“. Executive producer Lindsey Weber clarifies: “I love creature design, so I’m very happy to talk about it. JD and Patrick – the showrunners – the very first page of their bible was about orcs. they have a real passion for them, they like the practical effects with prosthetics and design, and they thought they needed to explore seeing as this is the Second Age and thousands of years before the events of the Third Age. It was very important for them to consider them as their own culture and explore their own world.

Realistic Orcs for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

If special effects will sublimate the episodes of the series The Lord of the RingsOrcs will impress viewers with a genuine sense of realism: “When close to the camera, the Ors use a lot of practical effects, almost exclusively. And when the special effects team helps, there are more of us together than on any film production you could find in the world. That’s how they are, when they come down to do their magic. We did a lot of preparation to know in advance which actor would be closest to the camera and they worked on that, and when you step back they have simpler systems to sometimes allow that sort of thing just because it was important for us to have the Orcs as if they were present in front of the camera in order to put everyone in the mood and give the impression that we really shot.
