Not surprisingly, AMD is already at work on the chip that will power the next Steam Deck. This new generation APU would notably take advantage of the latest architectures of the group: Zen 4 on the CPU level and RDNA 3 on the GPU side.
If the Steam Deck, launched last February, is just beginning its journey on the market, AMD would already be working on the design of the processor intended for the next version of the device. We learn from TechPowerUp that the firm of Lisa Su would be at work on what its engineers nicknamed, internally, the project ” Van Gogh Successor “, taking up the name given to the chips that power the current Steam Deck.
As a reminder, these include 4 cores and 8 Threads Zen 2 CPU, old generation (currently, AMD uses the Zen 3 / Zen 3+ architecture instead), and 8 RDNA 2 calculation units on the GPU side. The chip that AMD is working on for the future iteration of the Steam Deck will be significantly more efficient… and much more “up to dateon a technological level.
AMD’s Latest Architectures on the Next Steam Deck
According to information gleaned from the often well-informed YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, AMD is banking on both its new Zen 4 CPU architecture and its next-generation RDNA 3 graphics architecture. The chip in development would also be larger than the current version, with adiewhich could reach 110 to 150 mm². This difference in size would, however, have an impact on production costs, which would probably increase for AMD. It remains to be seen whether or not this price increase will be passed on to the end user.

On the performance side, we could expect a 25-35% improvement in PPC (performance per clock), thanks to frequencies that would rise to a maximum of 4.00 GHz in boost. Graphically, AMD would again bet on 8 computing units, but with computing power significantly boosted by the RDNA 3 design. In all, this new Van Gogh APU could develop up to 50% more performance… for give the next version of the Steam Deck a serious boost.
Note that says that we won’t see the color of it anytime soon: this new product is neither announced nor even mentioned by Valve at this stage. We shouldn’t hear about it through official channels for many months. So you have time to enjoy your current Steam Deck.
