The Russians can’t download Windows 10 and 11 | TechBuzz

Microsoft’s withdrawal of products and services from Russia and the dismissal of 400 employees in that country did not seem to be enough, and the time has come for even more rigorous sanctions. Russia’s TASS news agency reports that users in Russia cannot download Windows 10 and 11 from Microsoft’s official Russian website.

According to the report, trying to download Windows 11 or 10 from Microsoft’s official Russian website leads to a “404 file not found” or “directory not found” error. However, the download works smoothly with the VPN enabled. Interestingly, the Media Creation Tool download works, but attempting to run will result in an “0x80072F8F-0x20000” error and the message: “For some unknown reason, this tool failed to run on your computer.”

It is currently unknown whether this is a technical failure or Microsoft’s plan to withdraw its products and services from Russia, but for now VPN seems to be the only way for Russians to circumvent various restrictions and sanctions, because according to the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, there is a great chance that the use of VPNs to circumvent various restrictions and sanctions will not be punishable.
