The DOJ calls for international cooperation to be able to fight crypto-crime effectively.

A new report from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) calls for stronger international cooperation to counter the criminal use of digital assets. Among the recommendations, help foreign nations develop the infrastructure needed to investigate cybercrimes, share information in a reliable and robust way, and standardize international regulations.

DOJ calls for international cooperation

Ce rapport de 58 pages baptisé “How To Strengthen International Law Enforcement Cooperation For Detecting, Investigating, And Prosecuting Criminal Activity Related To Digital Assets” a été rédigé en collaboration avec les State Department, Treasury Department, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) et Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

While acknowledging that “the United States supports the responsible use and development of digital assets”, the report explains that this “pseudonymity” makes cryptocurrencies very attractive for money laundering, ransomware, terrorist, fraud and other evasion of various sanctions. The DOJ also warns that criminals have already targeted customers and individuals around the world by taking advantage of information asymmetry and technologies offering anonymity.

to be able to effectively fight against crypto-crime

“Uneven and often inadequate regulation allows criminals to expose the United States and international financial systems to the risks of jurisdictions where existing standards and laws are less robust.”

The DOJ therefore calls for international cooperation to effectively combat the illicit use of cryptocurrencies. To do this, the Department of Justice would like to be able to help other nations put in place the infrastructure to “conduct the type of complex and highly specialized investigations necessary in this field”, define “robust” information sharing and implement international standards to reduce the possibilities of jurisdictional arbitration.
