Leaders, and all those yet to become, gathered in Zagreb’s Lauba on Wednesday for a lecture by Mike Walsh, the world’s celebrated futurist, who opened Future Tense, a conference on the future of business.

“When we think about 2050 – each of us has his own vision – some of us are more pessimistic, some more optimistic. We all have in common the fact that we are educating future leaders. It is our duty to provide them with a sustainable environment that will allow them to develop their potential and that each generation inherits a better world. We have equal responsibility for what is happening and what is yet to come. I hope that in the next two days we will inspire you to learn and develop, more positive thoughts than at the beginning. When the conference ends, if we ask ourselves – what will 2050 look like – the answer will be: even more optimistic than we had, “said Manuela Šola, director of the Communication Laboratory and conference organizer, at the opening in front of 400 people.

Lecturing under The Future of Independent Thinking and Leadership, charismatic Australian Mike Walsh explained on an impressive 28-meter stage in Lauba what skills we need to adopt today to be leaders ahead of our time tomorrow.

“Teleworking is just the beginning of a much bigger revolution that is changing the nature of business itself. Mobility, autonomy, memory, objectivity and speed are the five values that will define 21st century digital health organizations. Artificial intelligence will not destroy jobs, it will change them. The new age requires a new kind of leader. We need to become the algorithmic leaders of the future and begin to combine a deep understanding of human complexity with a sense of computer thinking, ”says Walsh.

After the lecture, Walsh was joined on stage by leaders of the Croatian business scene who discussed the local perspective and gave different ideas about the future of leadership, all moderated by Mislav Ante Omazić, professor at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb.

The President of the Management Board of Raifeissenbank Croatia, Liana Keserić, pointed out that the leaders of the future should combine the left and right sides of the brain. At the same time use intuition and mind, imagination and information and combine faith and facts.

Along with her, the panel was attended by Marko Vičič, founder and CEO of the Futura Group and Mihael Furjan, CEO of Pliva and president of the Croatian Employers’ Association. Marko Vičič talked about creativity and leadership and how to reconcile these two seemingly opposing sides.

“I don’t think the basic principles of leadership have changed. Of course, environments and people have changed. I believe in leadership that includes humility and respect “, claims Vičič.

On the other hand, Mihael Furjan is in the dual role of a leader and spoke about the challenges of leadership on several levels.

“The leader of the future should listen to his customers. Assemble a team and find a way to be successful. Croatian leaders may not be the most prepared for the future, but that is changing and we are moving in the right direction. Croats are curious but cautious. We need to encourage employees more to make mistakes “, explains Furjan.
