Build 25136 in the Windows 11 Dev channel formalizes tab work in Microsoft’s File Explorer. It also adds some improvements for ARM and widgets.

New features for Windows 11 are coming at a steady pace. Microsoft released the Sun Valley 2 update in Release Preview on June 8, and promised new features dedicated to video games for Windows 11 as part of What’s Next For Gaming. The firm does not stop there and has published in the Dev channel of the Windows Insider program, a new build with some important new features.
Tabs in File Explorer: Finally!
For many years, the power users Windows claim the arrival of tabs in the file explorer in the same way as a web browser. It is a function that is offered in most alternative file explorers, and which allows you to keep your work on the organization of the PC in a single window.

With build 25136, Microsoft changed the file explorer to integrate a tab system. This addition was already rumored, but here it is in a build. The firm takes the opportunity to rework the software interface a little, especially at the level of the left panel, dedicated to the various shortcuts and favorites. The firm also indicates that it has clarified the display of the address of files in the cloud, stored on OneDrive to help the user better understand when a file is synchronized and also stored locally, or only available in the cloud.
This new feature will be gradually rolled out to insiders in the Dev channel to better gather feedback.
Notepad moves to ARM and widgets improve
Starting in early 2022, a Windows 11 update replaced the widget pane icon with a representation of the weather. Microsoft now offers with this build to replace the weather with more dynamic content with, for example, the latest sports results for financial.

Urgent information should in future appear directly in the taskbar with this system.
Microsoft also takes the opportunity to deploy an update for the Media Player and Notepad applications. The most important concerns the latter which becomes natively compatible with ARM64. The firm must continue its efforts in the field if it wants Windows 11 to compete with Apple PCs under ARM in the future.
Remember that the Windows 11 Dev channel is now a place of experimentation for Microsoft, with no guarantee that the new features will one day be available to the general public. File Explorer tabs may therefore disappear in a future preview.
