EU finds more evidence in case against Apple’s App Store | TechBuzz

Apple is under scrutiny in several countries for how the company earns from its official download store, the App Store. Now, more evidence appears to be emerging in the investigation of anti-competitive behaviour. This time it is due to a complaint filed by streaming service Spotify.

Reuters announced this in a recently published news item. That message states that “European Union regulators are stepping up their investigations into Apple.” This is due to a complaint filed by Spotify. As a result, there is “new evidence, but no new charges,” according to the news medium.

Apple under scrutiny because of the App Store

Sources familiar with the case told Reuters that this new evidence “should speed things up”. Spotify’s complaint has to do with the Apple Music streaming service and the way it restricts competition. Apple has not yet responded to this.

The European Union has already collected a number of charges in the fight against Apple over the App Store. Reuters now reports that regulators intended to send an “additional statement of objections”. That happened earlier this year. This would then be a new list of problems and possibly new charges.

More evidence found

But instead, the European Union is now choosing to send another letter to Apple about the App Store. This will be a letter containing all kinds of facts and new forms of evidence, which reinforce the existing charges. This could be problematic for Apple if the evidence is very strong.

Last year, the European Commission already concluded that competing streaming services are being treated adversely in the Apple download store. When consumers want to take out a subscription, they are thirty percent more expensive, compared to the offer of the company from Cupertino.
