The recent Vivo Iqoo 10 Pro and its 200 W charger raise a question: are we already reaching the limits of fast charging?

For their devices to find a place among the best smartphones, some brands do not hesitate to come out with amazing numbers. In recent years, one area seems particularly conducive to this one-upmanship: phone chargers. We have further proof of this with the Vivo Iqoo 10 Pro presented recently in China and detailed on Weibo. This is accompanied by a fast charge of 200 W.

Alexis André, Marketing Director of Vivo Mobile in France, specifies that it is the “first-ever smartphone with 200W fast charging“. The brand is thus cutting the rug under the feet of Xiaomi, which has been working on a solution of equal power for some time and whose marketable version seems to be on the way to being ready. Thus, the Iqoo 10 Pro claims to be able to go from 0 to 100% in just around 10 minutes thanks to its 20V/10A charger (20 volts x 10 amps = 200 watts). The smartphone has a 4700 mAh battery.

How far can fast charging be pushed?

Vivo obviously ensures that its technology has been proven to pose no danger to you or your device. Moreover, we are assured that the battery would retain at least 80% of its capacity after 1600 charge cycles. It is significantly more than the norm that we still find between 800 and 1000 cycles today (but things seem to be changing quickly). 1600 cycles should therefore allow you to last about four years with a battery whose condition remains fairly close to when it was new.

Smartphones from the Iqoo range are not released in France, so you should not be able to get your hands on this one through traditional distribution channels. The device, however, shows a very marked trend: manufacturers are putting the package on charging power to make you wait ever less. Because Vivo has not yet reached the glass ceiling. At the last MWC in Barcelona, Oppo presented a 240 W solution to fully charge a 4500 mAh battery in 9 minutes. The smartphone taking advantage of this charging power will be released in 2023.

Overbidding, what for?

The opportunity to wonder which brand will push the envelope next to reach 250 or 300 W, because it seems more and more certain that we are heading there. Certainly, this will allow them to highlight the charger “the most powerful on the marketto put on a good face. However, taking a step back, one wonders if this burst of innovation is really reasonable. Whether we wait 10 or 9 minutes, is there really a difference?

The next real breakthrough could be near-instant full charging, but is that even possible? In the meantime, we often find ourselves with one-upmanship which may seem a little anecdotal. Fast charging is already excellent with several manufacturers. However, the latter may have fine-tuned their technologies little by little to scrounge up minutes, the frustration remains the same for the moment: renowned manufacturers such as Apple, Google and Samsung are still lagging far behind in this area.
