When you launch the Netflix app on iOS or iPadOS for the first time these days and you don’t have an account yet, we have good news for you. Within the app you will find a link to the registration page of the popular streaming service. Previously, this was not possible due to restrictions from Apple.

If you, as a developer, want to have your app in the App Store, you must comply with the guidelines of platform holder Apple. One of those guidelines is that you pay a commission on every purchase within such an app. Not all companies (such as Netflix and Spotify) feel like that, so they filed a lawsuit.

App Store Guidelines

The judge ruled that Apple may not simply use such guidelines. As a result, apps from the so-called reader category are allowed to offer a link to an external website. There they are allowed to offer subscriptions and other products, from which Apple in fact earns nothing.

That commission can easily rise to thirty percent. Companies sometimes passed these costs on to customers, so that about ten euros already cost thirteen euros on iOS or iPadOS. That means less revenue on Apple’s platforms for companies offering their products. After all, it is cheaper elsewhere (Android and online).

Netflix offers a link to its own site

That problem has now been partially resolved. Netflix now has a link to its own website. There you can sign up for the service, decide which subscription you want and then return to the app to start watching. And that committee? Apple can (unfortunately for the company) whistle at that.

For consumers (and companies) this provides a good situation. Now they don’t have to take a roundabout route to sign-up pages like Netflix’s. The service can redirect them directly to the correct info.

Before you leave the app, Apple gives a warning and states that the company has nothing to do with the payment and that it is therefore not responsible if something goes wrong.

I don’t really care if Apple is in the mix or not. What is interesting to know is that if I take out the subscription directly with Netflix, I also get a discount worth the Apple tax. How much is that? 30%? Well, I want that when I get a discount every month. Then I’m interested in closing it directly to Netflix. I’m not interested in giving Netflix more money.
