Message recall in iMessage: this is how Apple misses the mark | TechBuzz

With the release of the fourth beta of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, Apple is once again adjusting the capabilities of the messaging app iMessage. However, not every change is welcome, and this update shows that. You can prevent someone from viewing the changes to a previously sent message.

But before we get there, we need to take a step back. Earlier this year, Apple announced that you can now edit and retrieve messages via iMessage. There is a (large) time limit, but it is nice that the option exists. An edited post gets a tag that presents the edit.

Changes made to iMessage

However, previously it was not possible to view the editing history. So you could see that a message had been edited, but not to what extent. With the new beta release of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, that changes. As a recipient, you get to see the entire editing history, which can be very good at times.

You can do that by tapping the Edit tag. You press the same button to get the editing history out of the picture again. However, that nice option disappears when you (perhaps with a drunk head) decide to undo the sending of a message. You retrieve such a message and then only send the last adjustmentas it were.

What then is the goal?

Then you will not see that editing history. Because the moment you send the modified, retrieved message, it is a completely new message. That sounds technically logical, but in practice Apple misses the target of the iMessage function.

Perhaps another limitation will offer some solace. You get two minutes to retrieve a message (that was fifteen before). So you have to act quickly. However, this still seems to be a rare occurrence.
