You often hear that AirTags play a role in finding stolen or lost items. But this time, the AirPods are the lifesavers. Police in the United States have successfully recovered a stolen car by pinging a recently stolen set of earplugs. Fortunately, the police are moving with the times.

Many consumers who have invested in the Apple ecosystem often take advantage of AirTags. With these NFC trackers it is possible to track stolen items, packages and – unfortunately – also people. We now know that, but the police in the United States recently used the AirPods for that.

AirPods help police find stolen car

The AirPods are Apple’s wireless earbuds. So they were used to track down a number of alleged thieves in a long-running car theft case. The police managed to find the thieves, but a chase resulted in a chase. The car thieves, of course, tried to escape.

You can see exactly how that chase went in the YouTube video above (via Berkeleyside). But back to those AirPods. How did the police manage to track down the thieves? The earplugs have recently been given a similar search function, which the Cupertino company’s AirTags also have.

Find it via Find my network

If you’ve lost your AirPods, you’ll likely find them quickly via the Find My network. That’s the same app you use for the AirTags. Within the app you can see the most recent location of the product from the past 24 hours. There is therefore a good chance that the police there made grateful use of this in the investigation.

Can you now just use your AirPods as NFC trackers? Well no. At least you should know that yourself. But they are expensive trackers. AirTags are a lot cheaper and do the exact same thing. In addition, the Find My functionality of the earplugs is not really intended for this kind of thing at all.
