When you think of gaming, you usually have consoles like the PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or PCs in mind. In fact, there isn’t as much gaming going on on those devices as you would expect. A completely different device class has taken up almost half of the gaming market.

Most games are played on smartphones

In fact, it is now the case in Germany that, according to a survey, most people play with their smartphones. According to Statista, that’s a total of 46 percent and thus number one. This is followed by a total of 33 percent of PCs and laptops. The consoles only come in third place with 28 percent. The tablet comes in fourth place with 20 percent.

Total were 5,026 people aged 18 to 64 surveyed in four surveys between July 2021 and June 2022. More points could probably be selected, because more than 100 percent are achieved.

The development coincides with the analysis by the Association of the German Games Industry (game). Alone in Germany, 23.5 million people are said to be playing on their smartphones. On console, it’s 17.8 million. In both areas, the trend is increasing significantly, while less and less is being played on PCs and laptops. PC gamers have continued to decline since 2019. It should be “only” 14.3 million.

Publishers are developing more games for smartphones

So it may not come as a surprise that more and more publishers are launching games for smartphones. Finally, Blizzard would be a good example with Diablo Immortal. Many PC gamers initially thought the announcement four years ago was a joke, and the monetization and gameplay has caused a lot of horror among Diablo fans.
