By introducing a secure solution for cross-border digital payments, Viber has reached the status of “super app”
LUXEMBOURG, July 27, 2022. – Rakuten Viberthe global leader in private and secure messaging and voice communications, expands business to digital payments with a mobile wallet available within the Viber app. The new feature will allow Viber users to easily send money to other people and businesses as well as set up a digital wallet to store money, for the beginning of the euro. Expansion to other currencies is also planned, along with new services that will be available soon.
Rakuten Viber enters the global digital payment market with a global user base of several hundred million consumers and a strong security reputation based on automatically set and two-way encryption for private communications. McKinsey estimates that the global payments market, including cross-border transactions, domestic transfers and credit card payments, will grow to 2.5 trillion dollars by 2025.
Initially, Viber payments will be available in Greece and Germany, and in the near future it will be extended to other countries. Viber is installed on 91% of smartphones in Greece, and German Stiftung Warentest named it one of the most secure messaging apps.
Adding funds to the digital wallet will be possible via Mastercard and Visa cards and local banks. In order to be able to provide licensed payment services in the first markets, Viber has partnered with Rapyd, a global fintech-as-a-service company. Rapyd will implement its licensed payment processing services in the Viber application, thereby strengthening the in-app payment capabilities. Once available in more countries, Viber users will be able to access a number of additional financial services, including:
- Viber-to-Viber payments wallet for domestic and cross-border transactions in euros, with plans to introduce other currencies soon
- Bank transfers for easy payment of routine expenses such as electricity bills
- Exclusive discounts and rewards local partners
In order to use Viber payments, users will need to set up a personal identification code or biometric recognition to enable secure transactions. Payment confirmations are sent automatically with mutual encryption. For complete peace of mind, Viber’s support team will answer questions in local languages.
The addition of a seamless in-app wallet payment solution and other innovative features to be introduced are a natural evolution of Rakuten Viber positioning itself as a stand-alone super-app. As of 2019, Viber users have completed millions of peer-to-peer transactions in over ten markets through various third-party chatbot and chat extension integrations
