At its Hwaseong campus in South Korea, Samsung organized a launch ceremony for the first processor in the 3nm GAA design. The ceremony was attended by directors at Samsung, employees who worked on the new process and political officials, because it is still a significant achievement by which Samsung overtook TSMC in placing on the market the processor in the latest 3nm version.
In addition to being the first 3nm processor, it is also the first to use GAAFET (Gate-all-around FET) technology as opposed to FinFET technology. At the dimensions that TSMC and Samsung are now at, GAAFET is more stable, and on the same surface, it brings generally higher performance and lower consumption. You can study the comparison of the two performances here. TSMC is also working on the 3nm process, but still in FinFET design, while with 2nm, TSMC also plans to switch to GAAFET.
We will not see the first 3nm GAA processor on smartphones, but it is intended for cryptocurrency mining devices.
