There is change coming for the Amazon Drive online storage service. By the end of 2023, the remote hosting solution provided by the American company will cease. This decision, announced by email to its customers, does not strictly speaking constitute a disengagement of the group in the cloudbut rather a reorganization and a reduction of the general public offer.
When Amazon Drive stops?
Amazon’s provisional calendar is organized around three dates. These steps are relatively spaced out from each other to give Internet users time to determine what to do: repatriate all the content to their computer, for example, or open a storage space with another service provider to move their files.
- October 31, 2022: Amazon will remove the Amazon Drive mobile apps from the Google Play (Android) and App Store (iOS);
- January 31, 2023: Sending new files to their Amazon Drive storage space ends. The documents already present remain always accessible;
- December 31, 2023: service closed.
What will happen to files on Amazon Drive?
If you do nothing by December 31, 2023, your content stored on Amazon Drive is at risk. You must therefore act before this date to recover your data. You are then free to decide what to do with them: keep them on your computer, make a backup copy of them on an external medium (and you would be right), host them elsewhere.
Attention ! If Amazon shuts down Drive, it doesn’t shut down Photos. During the process, it will be possible to transfer some of the contents present in Drive to Photos. Of course, not everything will be movable. This will concern photos and videos. Amazon announces unlimited image storage with its Photos service. Videos are also accepted, if they are less than 5 GB.
Who is affected by the end of Amazon Drive?
Not everyone is affected by the end of Amazon Drive. Indeed, you have to be an Amazon Prime customer on the one hand and a Drive user on the other hand. If you do not go through this storage solution, you have nothing to worry about or any action to take. Ditto if you don’t have a Prime subscription at all, because it’s a service that depends on it.
The end of Amazon Drive comes when the Internet giant announced in Europe – and more particularly in France – a significant increase in the price of the formula, but whose offer is still considered attractive. The increase, which is scheduled for mid-September, can however be delayed by certain tricks, by taking out a subscription just before for example. Of course, Amazon is not withdrawing from B2B cloud business.
