Xiaomi Mi 11i DESIGN AND ERGONOMICS
In terms of appearance and design, the Mi 11i is clearly a close relative of the Mi 11 series of phones. The combination of flat glass on the front and slightly rounded on the back is still a plastic frame, although it will easily deceive that it is metal.
The front has a 6.67-inch screen with a fairly thin frame with a hole for the selfie camera in the middle and the earpiece for calls above. On the right side are the volume control buttons and the protruding Power button, which is also a capacitive fingerprint reader.
By default, that fingerprint reader is active all the time and reacts to every touch, so it’s smart to set it to activate at the press of a button, in order to avoid unwanted activations.
There are two grilles on the top, one is part of the upper speaker, and the other carries the auxiliary microphone and the IR lamp of the remote control.
At the bottom are USB C, the main microphone and the main speaker and the tray for two nano SIM cards. There is no slot for microSD memory cards, nor is there a 3.5mm audio jack. As a consolation, the package includes an adapter from USB C to 3.5 mm.
On the back there is again a rectangular camera module on two levels, and the upper one has three lenses, while on the side there is an LED flash.
The Xiaomi Mi 11i is not waterproof in the true sense of the word, but according to the IP53 certificate, it is resistant to the penetration of dust and water splashes.
It is a standard large phone by today’s standards, and it is not very light either, with a weight of just under 200g.
Wiping with one hand is not too difficult because it is quite sticky like this, so it doesn’t slide, but it collects fingerprints and grease.
The package includes a 33W charger and a transparent silicone mask.
Soim in this cosmic black, is available in shades of white and silver.
Xiaomi Mi 11i SCREEN
I don’t know how many times we saw the 6.67-inch AMOLED screen two years ago, but it is present here as well. It is in FHD+ resolution and with 120Hz refresh rate. The bezel is reasonably thick, the panel is flat, and the selfie camera hole is quite small and doesn’t take up too much.
The screen itself is vividly colored, more than sharp enough with very good legibility at an angle. Outdoors, it could have been brighter, but I wouldn’t say it’s low brightness.
It also supports the AlwaysON display, which can be turned on all the time, on a schedule, or on tap. There are quite a number of AlwaysOn Display skins on offer so take your pick.
The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and in these weeks of use, it has not received any scratches or marks.
In short, it is a very good screen, which you will be happy to stare at for hours.
Xiaomi Mi 11i CAMERA
In the hole in the screen is the standard 20MP selfie camera for Xiaomi. It takes decent portraits with blurred backgrounds and video up to 1080p. No autofocus.
There are three lenses on the back. The main eye is a 108MP camera that takes 12MP photos by default by compressing 9 pixels into 1. It has phase detection autofocus and an f/1.8 aperture lens. There is no OIS. With that camera, it records video up to 8K at 30fps.
In addition to it, more precisely below, there is also an 8MP ultra-wide, which is not really an ultra-wide frame, and there is also a 5MP so-called. telemacro camera with autofocus for close-up shots pepper filling for Instagram.
The camera interface is typical Xiaomievo, a bunch of options, Night, Portrait, Pro mode and a bunch of others that they won’t use. The AI will automatically switch to Night mode when it decides it needs to and extend the exposure.
As expected, the main camera takes beautiful photos in vivid colors during the day with plenty of detail and a good dynamic range. Portrait photos are also good. Night photos in that Night Mode are just OK, and how usable they are will depend mostly on how steady your hands are.
The ultra-wide camera is in every way inferior to the main one, both during the day and even more so at night, but that’s not a surprise either.
You probably won’t even record 8k video, and 4K at 60fps is OK, decently stabilized, but it could have been smoother when rotating the camera. See a couple of video examples in the video review at the end.
ANDROID 12 + MIUI 13
When it came out, this phone was running Android 11, but in the meantime it has been upgraded to Android 12 and MIUI 13 interface. It will be familiar to all Xiaomi phone users with all its pros and cons.
Kaoi is usually smooth under the fingers, and offers a handful of customization options for everything alive. You choose system navigation with keys or gestures, a menu with or without applications, the new or old Control Center, font size, animations, icons in the status bar and, finally, complete Themes.
MIUI is OK for me personally because it works fast and fluidly, and it is like that on this device as well.
Some complain about bugs and ads, but I haven’t experienced either here. Everything works beautifully.
There is no bloatware application, Google Play and their set of applications is there, and Xiaomi spices it up with its set of tools and applications, among which is the one for the Universal Remote Control.
Xiaomi Mi 11i PERFORMANCE, SOUND AND BATTERY
Last year’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of data memory on this phone provides excellent performance with slightly stronger heating during exertion. Anyway, I haven’t noticed it affecting performance.
Everyday tasks, navigating the interface, surfing the Internet, riding on social networks, multimedia and even games with the aforementioned heating are performed smoothly and without jerking.
Stereo speakers are very good, not easy to mute. The headphones are connected to USB C via the attached adapter, or like me, wirelessly.
The quality of phone calls was fine, I had no problems with the proximity sensor during the call. It supports 5G networks, and I didn’t notice any problems with Wi-Fi connectivity. Of course, it also has NFC for mobile payments. Outdoor GPS works fine.
In addition to a very good and reliable fingerprint reader on the side, it also offers a less secure Face Unlock with a selfie camera.
The battery with a capacity of 4520mAh offers a full day of mixed use with over 6 hours of screen on, and is charged with a 33W charger in the package. In half an hour on that charger it goes to almost 70%, and to the plug in a little less than an hour. Wireless charging is not supported.
Xiaomi Mi 11i RATING
From all this, a conclusion should be drawn in which category to place this interesting Xiaomi Mi 11i. Although it has a great screen and performance, it is not a typical flagship.
It needs better cameras, a telephoto camera, premium construction and wireless charging. Perhaps we could still call it a flagship killer because it also has stereo speakers, an IR blaster with a universal remote and very good autonomy.
At a price of 532 euros, the Mi 11i is not overly expensive and offers a lot for that price, but since there is a whole sea of devices waiting for it in that price segment, I would say that you have to really like it for something to choose it.
