“Efficiency” mode in Windows 11, what is it and how to use it? | TechBuzz

The way of optimizing background processes in Windows 11 is changing! Task Manager got Efficiency mode!

Users are used to the fact that while working with each version of Windows, they can find processes that take place in the background and at the same time use available resources to an increased extent, even when the system is in an optimal state. Similar activities can be monitored using the so-called Task Managera (task manager) and everyone knows that with the command “End task” we interrupt the processes that slow down the computer.

Task Manager is a tool for controlling and monitoring performance within the operating system and provides useful information about how many resources are being used by processes running in the background. By specifying resources, we mean monitoring the use of the processor, working memory, graphics card or even bandwidth, i.e. amount of data transfer in a certain period of time. The mentioned “End task” feature can therefore be very practical when a single item within the operating system intensively consumes resources, which prevents normal work and processes on the computer.

A new update called Windows 11 Build 22557 brings a big change in this domain! With it, Microsoft is trying to implement a new feature that will allow users to limit the allocation of resources that will be tied to processes per individual application. Unlike “End task” feature that instantly removes the entire process and can have unwanted, and sometimes unpredictable, consequences for the processes in the system, a new feature named “Efficiency mode” will isolate and limit individual processes and minimize their impact on other ongoing processes.

Efficiency mode” will simply reduce the priority of individual processes within the Task Manager.

What is efficiency mode?

Enabling this feature is easy. It is necessary to right-click on an individual application in the Task Manager, i.e. the activity that is taking place, and select “Efficiency mode” from the drop-down menu.

How “Efficiency mode“ optimize processes on Windows 11?

In Windows 11, it is possible to order processes according to the order of importance, which can go from the lowest to the highest priority. “Efficiency mode” sets a certain process to a status called “THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST” to ensure that other processes on the computer can run freely. This mod will mostly refer to background processes that intensify CPU usage. This ensures that the operation of an individual application does not affect more important processes on the computer, which would lead to difficulties and uncoordinated operation of other applications and programs.

Described refers to the first step “Efficiency modea“.

Second step “Efficiency moda“is the so-called EcoQoSabbreviation of Eco Quality of Service. It is a standard that was introduced in 2021 and it is an optional tool for developers who want to run certain processes on applications more efficiently in order to reduce the consumption of resources.

If used appropriately, EcoQoS it can significantly extend battery life and power usage, reduce PC fan usage, and improve heat reduction on existing hardware.

When the Task Manager starts “Efficiency mode“, Task Manager runs EcoQoS to ensure that the entire process runs at low operating frequencies. Because of this, the processor will work more efficiently and consume less power, and the responsiveness of the user interface will be improved.

Efficiency mode

Microsoft also determined through testing that “Efficiency mode” affects the speed of launching applications or the Start menu while various processes are running in the operating system. The tests were carried out by Microsoft within a one-year period and the results showed that in this way the responsiveness of applications and programs increased in Windows 11. from 14 to 76 percent.

If it were necessary to summarize the effects, “Efficiency mode“ i EcoQoS bring the following improvements to Windows 11:

  • allow users to independently adjust processes within the operating system without the need for application developers to play a key role in potential problems
  • for the use of “Efficiency mode” and EcoQoS, some applications already have built-in support, and in the future the same addition will be extended to other popular applications
  • “Efficiency mode” and EcoQoS provide the possibility to reduce the use of processor power by up to 90 percent
  • they significantly reduce the temperature of hardware components and fan noise
  • they improve computer performance when it comes to multitasking and working with a large number of open programs and applications
  • they regulate delays and difficulties that arise when the computer warms up
  • they are focused on energy sustainability and rationalize the use of various computer components.

It’s good to know how “Efficiency mode” already available with some applications on Windows 11. In this context, we can certainly mention Microsoft Edge, which has built-in support for this feature.

In order to “Efficiency mode” enabled in Edge, it needs to be enabled in “Performance Settings” menu.

Rad „Efficiency modea” is displayed when the user sees the heart icon in the web browser toolbar. This icon is usually shown when, for example, the laptop is not connected to the electricity and the battery is being consumed, and at that moment Microsoft Edge will adjust its operation in order to reduce the same consumption as much as possible.

Windows 11 su sEfficiency modeom“ i EcoQoS standard, we got another new feature that can be of great use for streamlining work on the computer. We are sure that it will serve many users to optimize various processes that take place in the background of the operating system.

In this way, multitasking and work with a large number of open programs and applications can be adjusted even better so that there are no unnecessary stops or “freezing”, and the biggest benefits will surely be the batteries and computer hardware, because their consumption will be greatly reduced.
