Good bye, Revolut! Do you want to get paid for this service? Think again | TechBuzz

Revolut, a company that made a real revolution in access to money services in Europe a few years ago, quickly became popular and accepted by Croatian users. It offers keeping bank accounts literally free of charge, which compared to “domestic” banks has become attractive to many.

One of the biggest advantages of Revolut is that their Visa and Mastercard cards can be added to Google Pay and Apple Pay services in one go, which has made it easier and simpler for many people to pay their daily expenses in shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. Namely, the vast majority of Croatian cards of banks is still not possible to use via the aforementioned mobile payment services.

In the meantime, information appeared in the media about how the Tax Administration gave an opinion that regular income, i.e. salary, can legally be paid to a Revolut account, even though the IBAN assigned to you starts with LT (Revolut is headquartered in Lithuania). and not HR, as in domestic banks. Although this is questionable according to current Croatian laws, we will trust the Tax Administration.

So, if the tax office claims that you can receive your salary on Revolut, i.e. that you do not have to have an account in one of the Croatian banks, which charge you for managing it, it is logical that you will decide to open a free account in Revolut, in order to avoid unnecessary costs. But is it really smart?

Namely, in the last few weeks, Revolut had certain problems when topping up the account. Many readers have informed us about this, and I recently experienced something similar myself. So recently I wanted to top up my Revolut account with my Erste bank card, only to receive a message within a few minutes that the top-up failed, that is, that the card transaction was rejected. To my surprise, I immediately went to Erste Bank’s George app, where I was greeted by a cold shower. My funds were instantly withdrawn from the account by card transaction, but they did not reach Revolut.

Coincidentally or not, about ten minutes after the failed transaction, Revolut sends a push notification that they are currently having problems with the top-up system of top-up via card business and yes, be careful now – I’ll try later. OK, I think. The next day I try to top up one more time, but even then I don’t succeed, and I get a similar message. The transaction failed, but the funds in my Erste account were retained, so not transferred to Revolut (what a consolation).

I immediately go to the nearest branch of Erste banka to explain to me what it is about. The kind employee at the counter immediately stated that my first transaction ended with the funds being removed from the account, and upon my remark that they never reached their destination (Revolut), she escalated to a higher level.

So we have a problem that needs to be solved. OK. After returning home, I start a chat with the Revolut customer service. After exchanging a dozen messages with bots, I manage to reach a live person who, full of enthusiasm, is ready to solve my problem. After about half an hour of explaining, the friendly Revolut employee tells me that he “doesn’t know” where my funds ended up, but that he knows that “they are not lost”. To my astonishment and the question “when will I see my money?”, the employee answered that it should take five to seven days for the funds to be returned.

Five to seven days? So the money disappeared literally in a second, but because of their mistake, I have to wait a week to get it back?

At the time of writing this text, my funds from the beginning of the story are currently living their seventh day in the void of the fiber optic cable network, so they are not available to me either in Revolut or in Erste Bank. Here I definitely have to praise the employees of my bank because in the meantime they contacted me several times, checked and asked for additional information to solve my problem, while the Revolut customer service behaves as if it is none of their business.

Honestly, after the Tax Administration literally said that the salary can be paid to the Revolut account, I had the intention to close all the accounts in domestic banks and completely switch to the digital Revolut, but after this episode, the only thing left for me is to do the exact opposite. If my funds from Revolut are ever returned, I will immediately close my account with them, which I have already announced to them, but they don’t seem to care, because the fame has obviously gone to their heads. Even the fact that I am a user of the “Metal” plan (1,000 kuna per year) did not help my case to be resolved by some accelerated procedure, although when selling those premium subscriptions, they will promise you hills and valleys.

In talking with friends and acquaintances, I found out that this is actually a common occurrence, but considering that it is a relatively small amount, they don’t panic like I do. But after all, think about it. Do you want your employer to pay your entire salary to your Revolut account, so that after that you have to fight these kinds of battles, or maybe it’s smarter to keep some kind of security under the protection of domestic banks, no matter how much you hate them.

It should also be noted that the conversation with the Revolut customer service can only be conducted in English. So, if you don’t have the required level of English knowledge, don’t be surprised if Revolut “grooms” you, since from their side that conversation is legally unquestionable. Yes, that’s the text you don’t read when you agree to all the terms of use.

Of course, in the whole story we cannot fail to mention the unconstitutional law of the Republic of Croatia which states that salary must be paid to a bank account, not in cash. It would be ideal for us to receive our salary “on hand” and to decide on it ourselves, but it is the state that forces us into a forced relationship with banks. Unfortunately, we cannot escape from this situation, but we certainly can from Revolut.
