How to speed up data transfer from an external drive? | TechBuzz

We often use external drives to store large amounts of data or media files. When we talk about larger amounts of data, we are talking about terabytes of content being stored. Whether you use an external drive for private purposes, business purposes, for backup, or it is part of your archive, you have probably experienced a situation when transferring content to it or downloading it does not take place as quickly as you would like.

These situations can be frustrating because sometimes it takes an eternity to transfer certain contents, and it is not uncommon for the system to freeze. Fortunately, there are ways in which the process can be optimized to make the transfer of data from and to the external drive somewhat faster and more efficient. We present them below.

There is a simple rule on the computer – the more applications you have open, the more resources the system consumes. In the case when you are using an old computer with limited resources, this comes to the fore. Therefore, when transferring data to an external drive or downloading it from it, close all applications and programs that are currently open, as this will speed up the entire process.

Changing the settings for using a USB drive – “Better performance” option

On Windows, the USB drive by default uses “Quick removal” data transfer format. With it, the data transfer speeds are reduced, but the only advantage is that you can freely disconnect the device from the USB slot without having to use the “Safely Remove Hardware” options.

To disable “Better performance” option, follow the following instructions:

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Click on “Administrative Tools” and open “Computer Management”
  3. Within the menu on the left, select “Disk Management”
  4. Right-click on the external disk icon and select “Properties” in the new menu
  5. Within the “Policies” tab, select the “Better performance” option
  6. In case your device supports this form of change, enable the “Enable write caching on the device” feature below
  7. Click on “Ok” and save the changes.

Remember, when you make this change you will have to use “Safely Remove Hardware” option because otherwise you will be left without data.

Changing the file system

The file system used to format your external drive can affect its performance. Many of the external drives come with a conservative formatting method that allocates data in smaller segments, which ultimately increases their overall capacity. What is sometimes the negative side of this file system setup is the loss in transfer speed and therefore the data segments should be increased.

If you are using Windows, it is recommended NTFS file system with data allocation sizes of 64 kilobytes. This is the fastest configuration for modern Windows computers.

In case you use Mac OS or Linux computers, FAT32 will be the right file system for you and it can also be set to a data allocation size of 64 kilobytes.

Formatting on Windows is easy. Within “This PC” view with the right mouse button click on the external drive and below select “Format“. A menu will open where you can change file systems and data allocation size. When you have made the necessary changes, click on the “Start” to start formatting.

It is important to point out the fact that in this way all data will be deleted from the external drive, so before that, be sure to check if any important data is on it.

USB Selective Suspend

Disabling the “USB Selective Suspend” feature

In Windows 10 “USB Selective Suspend“ feature is made to extend the battery life of your laptop. It works in such a way that every connected device via the USB port puts it in a state of low resource consumption when you are not using it.

Sometimes this feature can cause errors such as the situation that the system does not recognize the device (Unknown USB device) or that the inserted device turns itself off.

These errors can affect the interruption of the data transfer process, so “USB Selective Suspend” turn off as follows:

  1. On the right side of the toolbar on Windows, right-click on the battery icon and select “Power Options”
  2. Odaberite „Change plan settings“ i u nastavku „Change advanced power settings“
  3. Expand the “USB settings” menu
  4. In the “USB selective suspend setting” option, select “Disabled” and then click on Apply>Ok to save the changes.

Disabling “USB Selective Suspend” features can also be done via Device Managera i Command Prompt.

Legacy USB Support

Disabling Legacy Mode in BIOS

Extremely slow data transfer speeds are sometimes caused by a feature in the BIOS called Legacy Mode. It is part of the BIOS because it ensures compatibility with older USB devices that would otherwise not work. While the Legacy Mode feature is active, data rate restrictions may occur.

Disabling Legacy Mode depends on your computer’s motherboard, but some rough guidelines can be given.

First, it is necessary to enter the BIOS using the F12 or Del key while the computer is in the boot phase. In the BIOS it is then necessary to find “Advanced” or “Drives” sections and within them open “Legacy USB Support“ settings where the same feature is disabled. In the end, everything needs to be saved and then restart the computer.

It’s only important to add that disabling Legacy Mode can affect other older devices you use (primarily if it’s a keyboard or mouse), so it’s possible that they won’t work after the changes have been made.

usb 3.0

Upgrade to USB 3.0 standard

Although the new USB 3.0 standard has been on the market for some time, most users still use USB 2.0 devices. When performing a data transfer, please note that the external drive and your computer both support the USB 3.0 format. This will significantly speed up the whole process, especially when dealing with large amounts of data.

Replace the old external drive with a new one

Although high-quality external drives guarantee a large number of reading and writing cycles, with intensive use, their work loses quality, which can ultimately affect the speed of data transfer.

If you are using an old external drive, check its functionality and data transfer speeds. In case you find that the transfer speeds are extremely slow, the best decision is probably to buy a new external drive.
