Common causes of screen resolution problems

Most screen resolution problems come down to one of the following causes:

  • The settings are not optimized or have been changed
  • Installation of a new monitor
  • Problems with Windows Update
  • Driver problems
  • Problems specific to individual applications
  • Hardware problem (monitor, graphics card)

While everything else involves changing settings, if you’re having hardware issues, you’ll probably need to replace the faulty hardware. This happens as screens wear out. However, if you’re trying to play a game or watch something at a higher resolution than your graphics card and display support, you’re going to have problems no matter what you do. Signs that this is a problem include:

  • Flashing screen
  • The screen randomly goes black or stays black
  • Blurry screen no matter what settings you change
  • Lines seen through the screen
  • Certain colors are excluded

In this case, you will need to select a lower resolution before playing or viewing anything. For example, YouTube allows you to change the quality of a video, which helps it display better.

Check for Windows Updates first

Before we dive into display settings, let’s take a look at Windows Update issues. If your screen resolution problems didn’t start immediately after installing a Windows update, the problem is usually caused by an update that changes your display settings or a change in your display/graphics driver.

Adjust the resolution

Many screen resolution problems in Windows can be solved just by adjusting the resolution. Windows updates, applications, other monitors, and more can change your default or custom settings.

  • Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select “Display Settings”.
  • Scroll down until you see “Screen Resolution”. Open the drop-down box to see your options. Usually the “recommended” option is what is best for your current display. However, try other options to adjust the resolution for yourself.

In display settings, you can also adjust brightness, scaling and settings for additional connected displays. If you need a brighter or more vibrant display and your monitor supports HD, click “Windows HD Color Settings”. You’ll only be able to change the settings if your monitor supports them, which mine doesn’t, so no HDR games and videos for this writer. In Windows 11, look for the HDR setting under “Display”.

You can also access advanced settings by clicking “Advanced Display Settings” in Display Settings. Select the display you want to change to see the details, then click “Display adapter properties for display” at the end of the details. From here you can adjust adapter properties, screen refresh rate (Monitor tab) and color management (Color Management tab).

Updating drivers or graphics card and/or monitor drivers

For something so necessary for the proper operation of hardware on Windows, drivers sometimes cause many problems. For example, screen flickering is often a driver problem. Drivers are often to blame for stretched screens, blurry resolution, slow refresh rates, and more.

They can also make your screen look more like a Windows 95 desktop than the modern, crisp look we’re all used to. Windows updates can help resolve screen resolution issues if the update includes an improved driver. This isn’t always the case, but it’s a good place to start. Although Windows likes to force updates automatically, you can also run a manual check.

Open the Start menu, type “Windows Update” and click “Windows Update Settings”. If Windows does not list updates or does not automatically check for new ones, click “Check for updates”. Otherwise, you may need to unpause updates if you’ve paused them.

If the update fails, you will need to manually update the driver. Right-click the Start menu and select “Device Manager”.

Expand the “Display adapters” option. Right-click on the display adapter and select “Update Driver”. Follow the prompts to search for and install a new driver. If you installed a new monitor, expand “Monitors” and do the same thing with your new monitor.

If you still have problems, right-click on the display adapter and select “Uninstall device”. Restart your computer and let Windows automatically reinstall the driver. You can also visit the display adapter manufacturer’s website to download the latest driver directly.

Adjust specific settings for specific applications

If you’ve recently installed a new game, app, video player, or anything similar, the app may be to blame for your screen resolution issues. This is especially true if resolution issues only occur within that particular application.

Check your application settings for resolution or display settings. Also, check the application requirements to make sure your display supports the optimal resolution settings. Neither setting will fix an app that needs a higher resolution than your screen can offer.

Adjust the DPI size

Manually adjusting the DPI size is usually not recommended. However, DPI (dots per inch) affects the size of various elements, such as icons. If they look fuzzy, your screen resolution may seem off. If nothing else seems to work, go to “Display Settings” and select “Scale”.

Enter a number between 100 and 500 in the “Custom Scaling” box. Click the checkmark to save the settings. The default value is 100. It becomes problematic when you change the setting, as all display settings adjust accordingly. Make sure you know all your original display settings before changing anything.

Change the mode of the image display adapter

If your Windows screen resolution problems are related to low resolution and you can’t change the resolution using any of the above methods, there may be another option. (Note the original setting so you can restore it if this method fails.)

  • Go to “Settings -> System -> Display -> Advanced display.”
  • Click “Display adapter properties for [Naziv za prikaz].” If you have multiple monitors with resolution issues, you can repeat the process for each monitor.
  • On the Adapter tab, select “List of all modes”.
  • Choose another mode from the list to see if it makes a difference. As you can see, you have a lot to choose from.
  • Press “OK” to save the changes.
  • Click “Apply” to finish saving.

Could the problem be a monitor failure?

If you have an older monitor, screen resolution issues in Windows may have nothing to do with settings, applications, or drivers. It could be a simple problem of your monitor being worn out.

Of course, it can also be a compatibility issue when it comes to an older monitor. Monitors can only support certain resolutions. Older monitors don’t support anything high resolution. If possible, try your computer with a different monitor to see if you have the same problems.

Will connecting a second monitor harm the resolution of the original monitor?

Adjusting the screen resolution can sharpen or blur the desktop icons, depending on the resolution you choose. However, if the apps and graphics look good, you should have no problem with the resolution. Instead, you just need to adjust the size of the desktop icons. Right-click on any free area of the desktop and select “View”. From here, select “Small”, “Medium” or “Large”.

If you want a custom size, press and hold the Ctrl key while using the mouse button to adjust the size smaller or larger. If you need to make text larger in general in apps and on the desktop, go to “Settings -> Accessibility” and select “Text Size”. Use the slider to adjust it.

Unusual appearance of monitor resolution at night

If your screen seems dim or the color is slightly off, but only during certain hours, such as at night, you’ve probably turned on the night light. This feature was introduced in Windows 10 with the Creator’s Update.

It is designed to reduce brightness slightly and uses warm colors to reduce blue light. You can turn this off, adjust the hours, and change how much blue light is filtered by going to “Settings -> System -> Display -> Night Light.”
