Saudi Arabia is the first country to approve Microsoft’s monster takeover of publisher Activision-Blizzard. A first step towards the closure of this important project for the video game industry.
The year 2022 began in the video game with one of perhaps the most important announcements in its history: the proposed acquisition of the publisher Activision-Blizzard by Microsoft for 68.7 billion dollars. Such a project would allow Microsoft to take control of cult franchises like Call of Duty, Diablo and World of Warcraft, but also to get their hands on King and his know-how with Candy Crush.
A project that cannot be completed in a snap of the fingers. Microsoft must obtain authorization from the authorities in charge of controlling free competition in the various markets. A first country has given the green light.
A first encouraging sign for Microsoft
In May, Microsoft President Brad Smith said the buyout process was between ” the end of the beginning and the beginning of the middle “. Several months later, it seems that we are now well on our way to the next stages of the project. Indeed, Saudi Arabia declared this weekend to be favorable to the takeover.

It is obviously not the most important territory or market for video games. The opinions of the FTC in the United States or that of the European Union will be much more crucial. However, this is an encouraging sign for Microsoft teams. It also shows that the authorities have the documents in their possession to begin giving their verdict.
Microsoft had communicated a closure of the takeover during the fiscal year covering until June 2023. It is difficult to assess the remaining time that everything could take. If none of the authorities find fault, the end of the takeover could come much sooner than expected. In the United States, the situation seemed to take a more difficult path for Microsoft.
