We have already repeated it many times: the main challenge of wearable electronics, the wearable, is that most people don’t really want to wear these devices, however discreet they may be. What if it was possible to really make people want to wear them? This is what a team of researchers from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Daejeon, South Korea is working on: an electronic tattoo ink.

At first glance, if you don’t look closely, you would swear you were looking at a traditional ink, but this one made of carbon nanotubes and liquid metal. It is essentially a bioelectrode.

With the latter, it is possible to follow the heart rate of the person wearing it as well as certain biomarkers in the sweat and perhaps more. And since there is metal inside, it could be heated for a physiotherapy effect: dilation of blood vessels, supply of more blood to promote healing, etc.

Ability to follow constants and act in physiotherapy

The main advantage of this ink is the proximity of the sensor to the skin, compared to a remote patch or sensor. In fact, it is not only more comfortable to “wear”, but it could also be more interesting in terms of the precision of the values ​​obtained. That being said, the researchers made no assertions on this point.

The scientists further explain that their ink is made with non-toxic materials and even washes off with simple soap, in case you want to remove it or opt for another design.

To be honest, this is therefore more of a paint applied to the skin rather than a “tattoo” strictly speaking. The researchers place an electronic circuit on the skin without tattooing it in due form. But it’s a great way to make their speech more attractive.

While remaining very comfortable to the user

User comfort is the primary benefit here, but many clinical applications can benefit from it. At least that’s the hope of the team and the general public, in the end. Several teams around the world are working on similar concepts, notably in Israel and the United States.
