In an interview with Popular Science, Tim Cook spoke candidly about Apple’s vision and the life he leads through it. What happens? The Apple Watch plays an important role in this.
Although Apple has made a huge impact over the years with the iPod and iPhone, among others, for Tim Cook it is the Apple Watch that stands out. Health is a priority for him.
Apple Watch reminds you to move
According to Cook, it’s the little clues that an Apple Watch gives to a healthier life. “With the three circles, we wanted to provide an easy way to get people to stand and move,” Cook said.
“The watch tells you when you only have 12 minutes left to walk to close the rings. I often receive messages from people who say that it is extremely motivating. They close those rings 365 days a year. I don’t even close them 365 times a year!”
Heart rate and cardiogram
Apple also put a heart rate monitor in the Apple Watch and went one step further with the ECG app.
“We put a heart rate monitor in the Apple Watch, but we also started working with new functions afterwards. People were initially notified that their heart rate was way too high or too low,” Cook explains. “Normally, they wouldn’t rush to the doctor, but the Apple Watch told you what was going on and that you really needed to get yourself checked out.”
With the ECG app, Apple went even further. The ECG was introduced from the Apple Watch Series 4. This electrocardiogram keeps track of the electrical impulses that control your heartbeat and heart rhythm. By looking at an EKG, a doctor can get a better idea of your heart rhythm and see if there are any irregularities.
“When I look back and people ask ‘what has been Apple’s biggest contribution to technology?’ I think it’s health. You can now send those measurements directly to your doctor,” says Cook.
Can Apple do better?
Cook is also candid about developments within Apple. When asked if Steve Jobs would be happy with the current state of affairs, he replied: “I think about him a lot and I miss him terribly. He often came to my office and we would muse about the future. I think now he would point out things and say that it’s good, but also that we can be much better in some areas. But that’s what we all do at Apple, we’re never satisfied. We are always working on tomorrow.”
The Apple Watch Series 8, as far as we know, will be announced on September 7.

And despite the fact that he will most likely also get a thermometer, it probably won’t work quite as you might think. We will see…
