New streaming king? YouTube wants to become a prime alternative
Watching online videos – YouTube isn’t easily outperformed in this respect. Things are different in the world of streaming services. Here, YouTube’s streaming alternative YouTube Premium is not at the forefront: In Germany, Amazon and Netflix share first place, well ahead of Disney+. YouTube Premuim only manages sixth place (source: Statista, as of May 2022). A move that Google’s video portal is said to be planning could change that.
Apparently, YouTube is working on To sell offers from other streaming services via their own channels. In other words: YouTube wants to develop into a portal for potential competitors, but wants to earn money from their business. Amazon does it very similarly with its channels, which offer topic-specific programs, but where external publishers can also send their content.
According to The Wall Street Journal (via 9to5Google), the internal so-called Channel Store has been in the works for 18 months. About the could probably in the first place smaller streaming services offer their content directly via YouTube. For example, the right subscription could be offered directly after trailers for new series and films.
In the USA there is already a comparable but still small offer. The corresponding area is called YouTube TV. Now Google’s video platform is said to be in talks to win more streaming customers as possible channels. As a sales argument, you rely on the immense global reach of the platform. If the plans become reality, customers in Germany should not be left stranded.

No competition for Netflix or Amazon: YouTube is going the wrong way
It is very unlikely that YouTube will become a distribution channel and an alternative platform for big competitors like Netflix or Amazon. They are strong enough not to be dependent on YouTube. One problem remains with YouTube Premium: Their own content simply cannot keep up with that of the competition.
