Android 13 is here. It’s packed with useful features that will make your phone better, even though they’re easy to miss. Don’t worry: we’ve dug it all up for you. Here’s what you need to know about the latest and greatest version of the world’s most popular mobile operating system.

Google officially released Android 13 on August 15, 2022, and the update will roll out to phones over the next few months. Although there are no striking changes to your phone screen, Android 13 is packed with useful features that you should know about.

Android 13

Icons to match your background

Android 12 introduced a brand new theme system called “Material You.” It collects colors from your background and applies them all over the phone. This includes Google-made app icons on the home screen, but Android 13 brings this to all icons. It still doesn’t automatically apply to all icons: developers have to enable the feature on their end. However, it is still much more useful than it used to be. Now you can make your home screen look perfect.

Assign specific languages to applications

It has been possible to change the language on your device for a long time. Android 13 extends this functionality by allowing you to change the language for individual apps. You might want most of your apps to be in your primary language, but there are a few apps that you’d rather use in your secondary language. You can customize it on the app info page in system settings.

Quick touch to turn on the flashlight

Quick Tap was introduced in Android 12 as a way to initiate actions by touching the back of the phone. However, one of the most common actions that people might want is left out. This is fixed in Android 13. Finally, you can set “Turn on flashlight” as a Quick Tap gesture action. Unfortunately, this is a Pixel-only feature. If you don’t have a Pixel, there’s another easy way to do it.

More sleep mode features

Bedtime Mode is part of Do Not Disturb and Digital Wellbeing. It aims to help you relax at night with a number of features to make your phone less attractive to use. Android 13 adds several new features to sleep mode. First, it can darken your background to make it easier on your eyes. Additionally, Android’s dark theme can now be set to turn on with sleep mode.

More secure media permissions

There are tons of apps that require permission to access your media files. Before Android 13 it was an “all or nothing” permission. If the app needed it, it could access all your files. Fortunately, that has been fixed. Android 13 allows you to select only specific photos and videos that the app can access.

Automatic buffer clearing

Clipboard access is another thing that’s been pretty open on Android (and iPhone) for a long time. Recently, Android got the ability to at least show you when an app accesses the clipboard. Android 13 further improves the privacy of the clipboard by automatically deleting it after an undisclosed period of time. If you have any sensitive data in the clipboard, it won’t stay there forever.

Android 13

Notifications are now turned on

Ever since Android has existed, apps have been able to send notifications as soon as you install them. You have to do your best to turn them off. Android 13 completely changes this approach.

From now on, notifications from apps are turned on. When you open the app for the first time, it will ask if you want to allow notifications to be sent. This makes it easy to never see notifications from apps you don’t care about that much.

Control the vibration intensity

Adjusting the volume for alarms, notifications and media is simple. Now it’s possible to do the same thing for vibration strength in Android 13. Vibration settings in Android 13 include volume sliders so you can adjust them for calls, notifications, alarms, touch feedback, and media.

A seven-day view of the privacy dashboard

Android 12 introduced the “Privacy Dashboard,” a place to check which apps are using which permissions. It originally only gave you a look back at the last 24 hours, but Android 13 increases that to seven days. This is important for paying attention to applications that may not be used as often.

Android-13-update

See which apps are active

The vast majority of Android applications do not need to be closed. However, some applications have special needs that allow them to be “active” in the background all the time. Fitness trackers are a good example of this. Android 13 makes it easy to see how many of these “active” apps are running. Pull down the Quick Settings panel and you will see an indicator at the bottom. You can stop the app from here if you want.

Android 13 has a lot to offer—just not on the surface. The updates surrounding privacy and minor “Quality of Life” improvements aren’t flashy, but they’re arguably even more important. Enjoy Android 13 when your device gets it!

However, as usual, not every Android device will get Android 13. Many people will have to buy a new Android phone to get it. The manufacturer of your Android phone will be able to provide you with more information about when and if your device may receive an update. If you are a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet user and own one of these devices, then you will definitely get the option to update to Android 13:

  • Galaxy S20 series (which started with Android 10)
  • Galaxy S21 series (which started with Android 11)
  • Galaxy S22 series (which started with Android 12)
  • Galaxy Note 20 series (which started with Android 10)
  • Galaxy Tab S8 series (which started with Android 12)
  • Galaxy Tab S7 series (which started with Android 10)
  • Galaxy Z Fold 2, Fold 3, and Fold 4 (which launched with Android 10+)
  • Galaxy Z Flip, Flip 3 and Flip 4 (which launched with Android 10+)
  • Galaxy A52 and A53 (which started with Android 11 and 12)
  • Galaxy A71, A72 and A73 (which started with Android 10+)

The oldest on the list are phones that shipped with Android 10 and were promised three years of updates, like the Galaxy S20 and the original Z Flip. We’re pretty sure the Galaxy S10 series won’t get Android 13, although the Galaxy S10 Lite that arrived much later might; it came with Android 10 out of the box, not Android 9 like the other models. The same is true for the Note 10 series and the later Note 10 Lite.
