AMD had warned, its range of processors is entitled to a new logic for names. The new Ryzen 7020 processors illustrate this with their 2019 Zen 2 architecture.
AMD has a new way of naming its processors. At first glance, one may feel cheated if one does not know the new nomenclature, but it is actually clearer and more transparent.
Where before the manufacturer could hide processors based on old architectures with new names, this is no longer possible on the new nomenclature.
This is perfectly illustrated by the launch today of the AMD Athlon and AMD Ryzen 7020 processors, code name Mendocino.
A complete and modern processor
As its name suggests, this new range of processors is therefore based on the AMD Zen 2 architecture which made the heyday of the Ryzen 3000. This is indeed what the 3rd digit of the new product name indicates, here a 2 in 7020 for AMD Zen 2.
The AMD Ryzen 7020 still benefits from some advances. It is notably built on a more modern 6 nm manufacturing process from TSMC than the 7 nm used on the Ryzen 3000.
With this chip, AMD intends to offer the ideal processor for a versatile consumer PC. It therefore incorporates 4 CPU cores with a frequency capable of increasing to 4.3 GHz in boost and an AMD Radeon 610M graphics chip. The TDP is announced between 8 and 15W.
Around its processor, AMD offers a fairly modern platform with LPDDR5 compatibility as well as a Microsoft Pluto processor for Windows 11 security from launch.
With a Radeon 610M, you won’t play games that are too greedy, but the graphics chip allows AMD to announce support for the AV1 codec. The brand still promises gaming at 60 frames per second in 720p on low-demand competitive games like League of Legends or Counter Strike Global Offensive.
A chip for very accessible PCs
PCs equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7020 chip will arrive on the market before the end of the year. The processor will find its place in the Lenovo Ideapad 1, Acer Aspire 3 ranges and in a 17-inch laptop made by HP.
