The introduction of the notch five years ago from the status bar of all iPhones with the Face ID system drove the battery percentage. iOS 16 finally brought it back, but many people didn’t like it.
Apple has crammed a number into the battery icon that represents the current percentage of battery charge. However, the icon itself is illogically filled even when the battery is half empty.
Looks like Apple has heard the complaints so they are working on it. iOS 16.1 beta 2 brings a dynamic battery icon that will drain according to the percentage of charge.
It should be kept in mind that what they try in beta may not necessarily end up in the stable version of the software, but most likely it will.
