At today’s event, Apple officially presented as many as four new models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro i iPhone 14 Pro Max. As you can see, Apple has added a little more confusion to the nomenclature, but we believe you will quickly get used to it.
The biggest advantage of the new iPhones is the functionality that you certainly don’t want to ever use, which is the ability to communicate via satellite if you find yourself in any crisis situation in an area without your operator’s signal. True, Huawei stole the show from Apple in this matter, presenting similar functionality on the Huawei Mate 50 model, but at the moment it is only available for the Chinese market.
iPhone communication with satellites may not be what you would expect, so it is not a classic internet connection through which you will be able to chat or surf social networks, but a rather demanding technology that allows you to send simple SOS messages to emergency services via satellite, which then connects to the operator’s network.
Due to the many challenges this technology faces, sending and receiving messages can take significantly longer than they are used to, so you will use it if you are really at risk, like for example tourists who set out to conquer Biokovo or Velebit in flip-flops and get lost after couple of hours.
Apple states that this functionality will be available in the US for now, and when it will expand to the rest of the world remains to be seen.
Another functionality that you also don’t want to try is the collision detector. If the iPhone, through new gyroscopes combined with artificial intelligence, detects a serious traffic accident, it will automatically call the emergency services.
As for the design, for the first time we can say that the rumors were not as accurate as before. Namely, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have a notch on the front, just like the previous four generations. Apple made another digression here, equipping these two models with last year’s A15 processors, while the new A16 is reserved only for Pro models, just as it could be understood from the rumors.
The regular model comes with a 6.1, and the Plus with a 6.7-inch screen. Apple states that the camera performance has been improved, especially in poor lighting conditions, while the iPhone 14 Plus will reportedly have the best autonomy of all models.
The next two models introduced today are the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. In addition to bringing the same communication capabilities with satellites and collision detectors, the Pro models have been slightly redesigned. Namely, they are redesigning the classic tooth in a pill, which is slightly smaller, but also has an animation function. Apple has done this very skillfully in software, since the pinhole “expands” depending on the need. For example, if you receive a notification, the pinhole will extend its black background and display the notification similar to Androids.
Another major innovation on the Pro models is the Always-On display. Modeled on Android, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will display the clock, date and other information on the off screen, as well as darkened background images.
Of course, the biggest innovation is the new Bionic A16 processor, made in the 4nm process, for which Apple promises 20% lower energy consumption than its predecessor. There is also a new screen that can shine up to 2000 nits, which is currently unique in the world of smartphones.
And here the new cameras bring improvements. Exactly how much, we will see when it arrives for our test, and Apple promises two to three times better results, whatever that means.
We should also mention the e-sim, which will be the only option on the American market. So, Apple is slowly killing the classic physical SIM card, which, according to them, has long been obsolete.
All new devices on the American market will be on sale from the 16th. September, while we still have no information about ours.
